Taib Is The Richest Man In Malaysia

USD15 Billion! – Taib Is The Richest Man In Malaysia

19 Sep 2012
Thief Minister! Taib’s abuse of his position in Sarawak over more than three decades has led to him becoming Malaysia’s richest individual, says BMF.
He is the man who cashed-in an entire jungle of valuable hard timber.  He is also the man who controls all the land titles for an area roughly the size of England, a position which he has systematically abused to enrich himself.
Sarawak Chief Minister, Taib Mahmud, is furthermore the gate-keeper for all the state and federal contracts handed out in Sarawak and he has privatised most of its key industries into his own family companies.
So it should come as little surprise that the latest audit on the Mahmud family, conducted by the Swiss NGO the Bruno Manser Fund (BMF), has estimated his wealth at a staggering USD15 billion.
It makes him Malaysia’s richest man, with his illegally gained assets topping those of the ‘sugar king’ Robert Kuok, who leads the Forbes Rich List for Malaysias with a mere USD12 billion.
BMF, which campaigns on environmental and indigenous issues in Sarawak, makes clear that this is a conservative estimate of the Chief Minister’s wealth, acquired through 30 years of systematic and documented plunder of Sarawak’s wealth and natural resources.
The audit, which forms part of a report entitled “The Taib Timber Mafia. Facts and Figures on Politically Exposed Persons from Sarawak, Malaysia” was released today in Brussels to mark the visit of the Malaysian Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Bernard Dompok, to the European Commission.
Environmental organisations have protested against any timber agreements with Malaysia until the corrupt and unrestrained logging practices are ended in Sarawak and in Sabah.
“More money than I could ever spend”
The report describes Taib as “The Godfather of a family business empire” with illicit assets in excess of USD20billion, of which his personal worth forms at least USD15 billion and:
“..describes in detail the business activities and personal wealth of twenty members of the Taib family, one of South East Asia’s most notorious kleptocratic clans with business interests in Malaysia, Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries”. [BMF release]
The charity declares its audit has been drawn up after a comprehensive analysis of the evidence now available relating to Taib and his family’s business assets, land grabs, concessions and contracts.
Altogether, the assets of 20 members of the Chief Minister’s family are analysed totalling a combined estimated wealth of USD21million. These members include Taib’s four children, his siblings, cousin Hamed Sepawi and also his two son-in-laws and brother-in-law, Robert Geneid, who have been absorbed into the family concerns.
The report lends substance to Taib’s own boasts on the campaign trail at last year’s state election that he has “more money than I could ever spend”!
Taib family line up – once all poor now vastly rich, thanks to Taib’s illegal abuse of his position as Chief Minister
Time Najib took action!
This latest revelation raises yet again the issue of Prime Minister Najib Razak’s failure to take action over this rogue Chief Minister, whose greed and corruption has now reached legendary status even in Malaysia, where political corruption is commonplace.
Billionaire son and millionaire son-in-law. Abu Bekir (left) and Alwee Alsree pose as the two top executives of the Taib family conglomerate CMSB
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has acknowledged it has opened an investigation into Taib, following numerous denunciations and also numerous reports containing solid information on this site.
However, until it gets the political green light, it is sadly well-known that the MACC lacks the independence to act.
The PM did try to encourage the failing 75 year old to step down before the recent state election. However, Taib refused to quit out of a justifiable fear that once removed from office he could be prosecuted.
A public promise was extracted that Taib would move soon after that state election, but with a Federal Election, G13, now on the horizon there is little sign he plans to make good that promise.
Kuching Declaration
The report details how the Chief Minister and his family have collected cars, jewels, homes and property while across Sarawak people have been left with nothing.
The exposure of Sarawak’s Chief Minister as Malaysia’s richest man comes at an extremely difficult time for his administration, which has been spending the last few days rubbishing the opposition’s ground-breaking Kuching Declaration made on Sunday, Malaysia Day.
This Declaration signalled key commitments by the opposition parties to show full respect towards Sarawak’s rights of equality and autonomy, established at the time of Independence.
Even more crucially, the Declaration has pledged that a PR government would end Taib’s land grabs, channel more oil wealth into helping Sarawak’s poor people and end the robbery of the state by corrupt politicians.
The Declaration has also pledged to bring the infrastructure development and standard of living of the people of Sarawak (which has given so much oil to Malaysia) to the level of the rest of the country.
Sarawak’s increasingly bizarre autocracy has seen the state’s wealth sucked away from its people into the hands of the Mahmud family and its eccentric billionaire “godfather” Taib himself
Yet, in a series of public attacks, Taib and his BN party leaders have chosen to dismiss and and scoff at these desirable outcomes on the grounds that they are “unrealistic“!
With a general election on the horizon, it has put his regime in a weak position to capture the hopes and confidence of large swathes of the the population, who have suffered 30 years of delayed development and increasing poverty under his rule.
Now, while voters in Sarawak are in the process of digesting the information that Taib and BN have no interest in reversing land grabs or increasing the state’s share of its own oil from a scandalous 5% to 20%, this new BMF report has added key information about the enormous wealth that the Chief Minister’s policies have meanwhile brought to himself and his own family!
Key details
According the the evidence brought forward by BMF, various family members can be seen to have been favoured over others as the old man has distributed his largesse:
“Taib’s elder son, Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, a major player in the Sarawak construction, property and energy business, has been rated at USD 1.5 billion. Next in line are Taib’s Canada-based socialite daughter Jamilah Taib Murray (USD 1 billion), Taib brother and timber entrepreneur Tufail Mahmud (USD 600 million), sister Raziah Mahmud (USD 500 million), daughter Hanifah (USD 400 million) and son Sulaiman (USD 300 million). Timber conglomerate Ta Ann founder and Sarawak Energy chairman, Hamed Sepawi, a first cousin of the Sarawak Chief Minister is rated at USD 175 million.” [BMF briefing]
Money can buy your dreams? Jamilah (centre) gets to play Diana Ross on stage in Canada.
The charity believes that while much of the work is performed by ‘key helpers’ to the family business, such as the Briton Richard Curtis, who administers the family company CMSB and in-laws like the Canadian Sean Murray and Australian Robert Geneid, most of the assets are kept strictly to blood relatives.
For this reason the wealth of Taib’s daughter Jamilah, for example, who is now a Canadian national and a shareholder in major property companies in London, Australia, Canada and the US is estimated at a hefty one billion USD. However, her husband Sean Murray, who has increasingly taken up Directorships in all of these companies is only valued at USD10 million.
“Sean Murray is a Canadian National of Irish origin from Ottawa. Sean studied at Ashbury College, Canada, before studying at Carleton University, Canada where he met Jamilah. Sean married Jamilah in 1987 in Kuching.185 Sean lives with his wife, Jamilah, in a mansion in Rockliffe Park, which was named “the city’s second most expensive house in 2009.” Sean and Jamilah are often seen partying with Ottawa’s elite, including Ottawa Mayor Larry O’Brien and his wife.” [BMF Report]
Ottawa socialites – Jamilah and Sean Murray are to be seen at all the key events with all the right people.
The report points out that Sean Murray has in the past alleged that the Canadian and London property companies are his own family concerns and that they are not and had never been funded by Taib Mahmud:
“Sakto, Sakti and Ridgeford are not and have never been funded by Mr Taib Mahmud….Should this allegation be made, our clients will sue you without further notice”. [Statement by Sean Murray's lawyers, Mishcon de Reya]
Yet, in a later interview Taib himself conceded that:
“It started 20 to 30 years ago. I gave money to my daughter…I got a gratuity and gave some money to her to start a new business, it thrived…. it is a property development company…. it got successful and from successful they go do business in London.”
The BMF report provides fascinating insights into the Taib family’s corruption and wealth, along with evidence that will make it even harder for the rest of Malaysia to ignore this shameful situation.

Skandal Scorpene.

18 September 2012

Wakil peguam Lawyers for Liberty (LFL), Fadiah Nadwa Fikri mempersoal tujuan sebenar siasatan terhadap Suaram.

“Kenapa kerajaan begitu beriya-iya hendak mengejar dan siasat Suaram? Apakah untuk menutup kes Scorpene?” soal Fadiah.

Pagi tadi, Menteri Perdagangan Dalam Negeri Koperasi dan Kepenggunaan Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob berkata, Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia (SMM) akan mengesyorkan kepada Peguam Negara untuk mendakwa syarikat Suara Inisiatif Sdn Bhd yang dikaitkan dengan Suaram.

Sedia disiasat

Kejar Suaram tapi Najib, Razak Baginda dibiar bebas

Suaram sedia hadapi 'kemungkinan paling buruk'

"Kami percaya pihak berkuasa sebenarnya main kotor kerana mereka cuba bezakan Suaram dan Suara Inisiatif, sedangkan (kedua-duanya) satu (entiti) sama," katanya.

LAST LAP OF EVIL: Opposition bashing by BN goes into OVERDRIVE

LAST LAP OF EVIL: Opposition bashing by BN goes into OVERDRIVE

Mengapa kami kibarkan sang saka Malaya?

Pakatan Rakyat Convention - 10 resolutions

KINDLY CIRCULATE TO EVERY MALAYSIAN VOTER, AS WIDELY AS POSSIBLE! THANKS.
You won't get this in the newspapers

The Pakatan Rakyat convention in Penang sent an unmistakable and chilling signal to arch rivals - Prime Minister Najib Razak and the Umno-BN coalition. Despite a roller coaster journey since sweeping to power in the 2008 general election, Pakatan has not been diminished by the enmity and malice unleashed by its political opponents, but has been able to mature and grow stronger in the process.

Indeed, the star-studded conference hall was packed with the likes of PAS president Hadi Awang, Mujahid Yusof Rawa, PKR president Wan Azizah, Selangor Mentri Besar Khalid Ibrahim, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang and Karpal Singh.

Pakatan delegates and other members of the public who wanted to meet their 'reformasi' heroes were spoiled for choice. DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng, who is also Penang Chief Minister, played host to the 2,000-strong Crowd at the convention.

Racial policies rejected, preliminary 10-point manifesto unveiled.

In a rousing opening address, Guan Eng warned Prime Minister Najib Razak's Umno party not to 'hijack' the federal constitution and misinterpret the controversial Article 153 to divide the ethnic groups in the country.

"Somehow Umno always fails to mention that Article 153 also states that the legitimate interests of other communities must also be protected, Guan Eng said.

Guan Eng also unveiled a ten-point document to be signed by all the top Pakatan leaders and which is set to become the coalition's preliminary manifesto in the coming general election. The resolutions to outline in detail the changes Pakatan will introduce within the first 100 days of its taking over Putrajaya if it wins the next general election expected to be held early next year.

The resolutions are:

1. A restructure of institutions including the Elections Commission (EC), the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), the Attorney-General's Chambers and the Royal Malaysian Police. During a debate on the policy framework, DAP's Anthony Loke requested PR bring the MACC under the purview of Parliament.

2. A repeal of the Internal Security Act (ISA)

3. Instruct Khazanah Berhad, Employees Provident Fund (EPF) and other government bodies to take over highway assets from the concessionaires in order to abolish the toll system.

4. A restructure of the country's subsidies, to lessen subsidies given to the private sector (such as the RM19 billion in gas subsidies given to independent power producers) and transferring these to subsidies for the Man on the street.

5. Acknowledging the role and sacrifices of civil servants by studying the current pay schemes and increasing the incentives for teachers by RM500 a month

6. Transferring private water concessions to the government

7. Offering free wireless Internet access to those in urban and semi-urban Areas

8. Cancelling Felda Plantations and opening up its farms to second- and third generation Felda settlers.

9. Increasing oil royalty payments to Sabah, Sarawak , Terengganu and Kelantan to 20 per cent from 5 per cent currently.

10. Formation of a Royal Commission to solve the problem of illegal immigrants and citizenship issues in Sabah and Sarawak .
               ? May I add No. ?

11. To abolish the RM50 govt. Tax on the use of credit card. This tax is absolutely nonsense and unnecessary. We use credit card so as not to carry large amount of cash for our own safety. Now, by imposing this tax, the government is forcing us to carry large amount of cash thereby endangering our lives.?

Don't you think Pakatan Rakyat deserves your vote for a change for the better at the next 13th G. E.?

Evidence? ? Look at the improvements in Penang and Selangor.

If Pakatan Rakyat wins...

Oh yes, under a Pakatan Rakyat government your life will be transformed. The highways that you travel on would be toll-free, even the petrol that you need to feed your engine would cost lesser, while you could get a new set of wheels at half the price. Good riddance to that old worn out junk starting to fall into pieces.
Even your children’s education will be funded by the state. So with more spending power Malaysians can afford a better quality of life, without having to be indebted up to their noses.
The 1Malaysia Privilege Card to be given to all Malaysians would become a joke, as everyone would already be enjoying lower prices that come with their own credit cards in the future.
A political transformation
PR will ensure a free market economy, so that goods remain competitive and within the budget of everyone. Protectionist policies would become a thing of the past, and businesses that do not learn to compete on a level playing field will suddenly find themselves out of business e.g. Proton. Er.. hem!
This also translates into a healthy economic trend that will encourage businesses to innovate and embark on research and development.
Foreign investment will return by leaps and bounds, as the political climate improves and Malaysia becomes a fully-budding and blossoming democracy.
Naturally, the brain drain will be reversed as patriotic overseas Malaysians return to their homeland, keen to help revamp the country.
Even personal freedoms and statutory rights would be protected, allowing everyone to say their piece in the administration of this country.
Oil producing states would receive 20% oil royalty instead of the current 5% which is yet to be given to states like Kelantan. The current 5% that Kelantan deserves which amounts to RM800 million a year would make life really bright for the Kelantanese and for the people in Sabah and Sarawak too.
Political sanity and widespread reforms
For once, Malaysians can sigh with relief, as the invisible siege mentality that weighs down the entire country is lifted. Political sanity would return and the rakyat would be encouraged to adopt critical thinking.
Existing laws would be reviewed to reflect the times. The Evidence Act that was recently enacted to stifle dissent would be reviewed while outdated laws would be purged from the system.
PR politicians would be unlike BN politicians, who simply love to play politics instead of serving the public. The government would be accountable, competent in their administration and transparent. What a difference from the current disastrous BN government which chooses to hide behind a web of lies under the antiquated Official Secrets Acts.
Politicians would have to abide by a strict code of conduct that prevents 'frog-hopping' and also be held accountable to the people.
Cronyism would become a dirty word, and outlawed by a strict Tender System. Any abuse by politicians will signal their impending demise - politically speaking of course!
Constitutional reforms
The Federal Constitution would be restored to its former glory with its original noble goals intact.
The pillars of government - the Executive, Judiciary and Legislature would be independent of each other. In simple terms it means that no one can 'play' or stab your back. The corrupted and the criminal will have to pay for their crimes as only the innocent shall be accorded protection.
The outflow of illicit funds would be stemmed, and efforts to get these funds back into the country would begin by identifying and prosecuting those who were guilty of the massive money laundering. These culprits are indeed a threat to national security.
Petronas, as the largest industry in the country, would be put under the purview of the government with full accountability to the public.
A total revamp of the Police Force will help the cops regain their respect from the public and reignite their interest and dedication to protect the country’s citizens and enforce the law in a proper and non-corrupt way.
End of political re-engineering and the beginning of racial healing
Population re-engineering would come to a halt, and those who do not deserve citizenship will be shipped back to their country of origin (even if they speak fluent Bahasa Malaysia).
Education would be put on a new pedestal, and the power of the Internet would be made available to everyone in the country.
Islam would retain its position as the religion of the country, while freedom of worship would be protected.
Racism would be totally outlawed and stiff sentences would be imposed on racist bigots.
Race and religion would be dropped and erased from our personal records, and Malaysians should adapt to their new identity as Malaysians.
Efforts would be made to ensure that everyone deserves equal citizenship rights in this country.
Our History books would be reviewed and rewritten to ensure a truthful chronology of our past struggles.
Reduction of foreign labour
Foreign labour would be reduced to ensure that every Malaysian regardless of skills and education has access to adequate paying jobs. Today, unskilled Malaysians cannot compete with the foreign workers brought into the country due to the absence of a minimum wage. This situation will only aggravate the unemployment rate in this country.
Isn’t it absurd that the salaries of clerical staff, despatch riders and factory workers are equal or lesser than what the blue-collar foreign laborer now earns in Malaysia? I am talking about towns and cities outside of the Klang valley where the average wage is still way below international standards.
First world nation
Reducing foreign labour will also reduce the amount of monetary funds that leave our shores, and in no time Malaysia will be a first-world country, probably overtaking resource-scarce Singapore which has an average monthly median income of RM6,500.
Impossible?! Not really, as long as we strive to work harder and are backed by a caring government, we would reach first-world nation status in no time at all.
That means everyone in this country can afford to pay cash for an iphone or ipad, instead of going into debt and buying on credit.
More people would deserve to own a platinum credit card in the future with that kind of disposable average income. So when the time comes, remember not to leave home without it (the card, that is!).
There would be no turning back
Barisan Nasional, after governing for 55 years, should question themselves as to how they managed to miss all the above aspirations desired by the Rakyat and paint themselves into a corner without any future or hope of forgiveness from the populace?
How did BN manage to bury themselves in such a deep cesspool of debts, racial tensions, religious strife, wanton corruption and distrust that combined together will ensure that they are thrown into the political rubbish heap!
The Rakyat will no longer feel so merciful towards the BN now that their eyes have been opened to the massive corruption that has gone on under their noses for the past 5 decades. BN leaders will argue they tried their level best, but their best wasn’t good enough. And by far!
The Rakyat are a fussy lot and they do not condone failure nor are they amused at having being taken for a ride. RM1 trillion worth according to the Global Financial Integrity in its latest illicit outflows report.
For BN, it was good…while it lasted. But they have been caught napping on the job once too often, and also with their fingers in the till. They seem to have totally forgotten their role as administrators of this country.
But not to worry. Warming up the Opposition bench or alternatively their prison cell - depending on how guilty they have been - will allow them quality time for soul-searching and to determine what went wrong!
